Ex GM student to solo in Band concert

A former Gloucestershire Music student is set to solo in Band concert, marking a major part of her degree.

Emily Jenner is originally from Wotton-under-Edge, and grew up learning the clarinet through Gloucestershire Music at school, and then progressed through Five Valleys Music Centre, Gloucestershire Youth Wind Orchestra, ending up as principal clarinet of the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra.

She was offered a place with scholarship at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2012, and is now in her final year of study. Emily rediscovered her love for symphonic wind band playing early on at the Conservatoire, and has been lucky enough to play with the Band of the West Midlands Fire Service and Band of the Mercian Regiment as well as to study abroad for a term in Belgium in 2014 and also successfully auditioning for the European Union Youth Wind Orchestra in 2015.

Emily said “Growing up through Gloucestershire Music gave me fantastic opportunities to play great repertoire with great musicians and conductors in some excellent venues. I feel very lucky to have those opportunities whilst so young, and it has certainly contributed to my development as a musician.”

On the 12th February, Emily will be performing the Artie Shaw Clarinet Concerto with the Band of the West Midlands Fire Service at the Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire, B3 3HG. The concert titled ‘Inferno!’ will feature a variety of music for symphonic wind band with everything from Shostakovich’s rousing festive Overture to film music, jazz and more – a concert which Emily is organising as a major part of her degree. “I’m really excited to be organising this concert, and also playing the Artie Shaw concerto. It’ll be a fantastic evening of music in aid of Breast Cancer Care, who I know from personal experience do fantastic work in supporting people with Breast Cancer.”

Tickets are available now from inferno.ticketsource.co.uk (expired link) and 07591 089104, priced at £10 (adults), £8 (concessions), £4 (full time students).
