Violin, Viola, Cello & Double Bass
All stringed instruments are delicate and should be handled carefully. Your instrument will require little maintenance apart from tuning (which you teacher will help you with), some rosin for your bow and occasionally replacement strings
Strings: individual strings can be purchased from Colwell Arts Centre, or purchased from some music shops or the internet. Good student strings such as D’Addario Prelude are desirable.
Bow: care should be taken not to touch the hair of the bow with the fingers as this can stop the bow from working properly due to grease building up. Always loosen a bow fully after each use, this helps to prolong the life of a bow.
Case: always opens the zip fully before lifting the lid. Zips can get damaged if they are not fully opened. After every use always place the Violin back into the case.
Tuning: it may be best to leave any tuning via the top pegs to the teacher. Over tightening of the pegs can easily lead to broken strings.
Books: please do not place books directly on top of the Violin. This can damage the bridge or worse, crack the Violin rendering it useless
