Online Ensemble Sessions

Announcing Online Ensemble Sessions!

We are delighted to launch our online ensemble sessions. Due to the nature of playing online, these rehearsals won’t be exactly the same as you’d expect a face-to-face rehearsal to be but the activities and material used will be tailored to get the most out of the online facility. We are really excited to use this opportunity to be able to rehearse in a different way and to build on skills that are difficult to do in face-to-face rehearsals. We can’t wait to start and are confident that we will have a musically-fulfilling range of activities for you to enjoy on a weekly basis. On top of our weekly online sessions, there will also be some very exciting opportunities to learn online with big names from the music industry. Watch out for details of these throughout the term.

Our online sessions this half term will culminate in our debut Virtual Christmas Concert featuring all of our groups performing pieces they have learnt online.

When are the sessions?

These sessions will be launched from 14th November with 5 weekly sessions before Christmas. To try and make our online music-making as relevant and engaging as possible, we have split them up into a few categories throughout the week. These are:

Youth Ensembles

Saturday 10.00 - 11.30am – Junior Centre

Wednesday 6.00 - 7.15pm / 7.30 - 8.45pm – Jazz Centre

Thursday 6.30 - 8.00pm – Senior Centre

Friday 6.30 - 7.30pm – Youth Orchestra

Adult Ensembles

Monday 7.15 - 8.30 – Wind band & LAYP

Wednesday 7.30 - 8.30 – Jazz

Wednesday 7.15 - 8.30 – Orchestra

Saturday 11.30 - 12.15 – Brookfield Adults

These centres are open to anyone from across the county. Within these sessions, we will also have ‘breakout rooms’ to split you into smaller groups for part of the session.

What youth group is best for me?

We know that not everybody takes graded exams on their instrument and that many of you will have missed out on doing exams recently. However, we have used the grading system as a rough guide so you can work out the best group(s) for you to attend.

Junior Centre – Saturdays 10.00 – 11.30

As a guide, if you play any instrument from beginner to grade 4 standard, the Junior Centre will be best for you.

Senior Centre – Thursdays 6.30 – 8.00

This will be split into Strings and Wind Band. If you are grade 5 standard or above, the Senior Groups will be best for you. This includes members of GISE and GYWO and any other musicians above grade 5 standard. If you are grade 7 standard or above and play an orchestral instrument, the Youth Orchestra will be best for you but you are also welcome to join our Thursday sessions.

Youth Orchestra – Fridays 6.30 – 7.30

Our Youth Orchestra is normally open only to those who audition. However, we are delighted that any students at grade 7 standard or above can join us for our online Youth Orchestra (GYO).

Jazz Centre – Wednesdays 6.00 – 7.15 / 7.30 – 8.45

The Jazz Centre is open to anyone who is usually part of a GM jazz ensemble on a Wednesday night or Saturday morning or for anyone that would like to join. The instruments catered for are:

  • Alto Sax
  • Tenor Sax
  • Flute
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Bass Guitar
  • Drums

Most members will be suited to the first session of 6.00 – 7.15. However, members of GYJO and any experienced jazz musicians above grade 6 standard should attend 7.30 – 8.45.

Adult groups are split into Wind Band, Orchestra and Jazz. Please get in touch if you are not sure which is the best for you.

How will the sessions work?

We are delighted to have access to the BigBlueButton system which is similar to Zoom but has the added benefits of us being able to store sheet music, backing tracks etc. to share with you. Once you have signed up and paid for the sessions, you will be sent login details and we will share instructions on how to use the site and how and when to join our live sessions. All you will need is a laptop, tablet or phone, yourself and your instrument. We will also be sending some sheet music to you in advance, you can either print this off or read it from another device. Percussionists, if you don’t have any instruments at home, don’t worry! We will still have ways for you to be part of our sessions using items from your home.

How much will it cost?

For this half term, the fees are as following:

£20 for youth members

£30 for adult members

The difference in fees is due to the generous funding of Arts Council England towards our youth groups.

How do I sign up?

To sign-up for our long-awaited return to rehearsals, please email glosmusic@gloucestershire.gov.uk to let us know.

Once you have signed up, you will be sent an email with sign in instructions and an invoice.

We can’t wait to ‘see’ you!
